We have had many queries about the 17th edition and whether you need to obtain a qualification in the new Bristish Standard, as such we have complied this brief explanation of the impact of the 17th edition will have on electrical contractors.

I have a 16th Edition qualification, do I have to obtain the 17th Edition qualification?

No. However the changeover to the 17th Edition has many implications for contractors, including:

Part P Competent Person Scheme members: If you are a qualified supervisor for a Part P registered Competent Person scheme, then you will be required to evidence your qualification to the 17th Edition by 2010

If you are applying to become a Part P Competent Person, you will be required to hold a 17th Edition qualification once the 17th Edition is introduced (July 1st 2008)

If none of the above applies, there is no compulsion to obtain the 17th Edition qualification, but commercial pressure from clients and specifiers may encourage you to consider upgrading your qualification to what will be the current standard.

There will be a transition period from 1 January 2008 to 1 July 2008, during which time an installation can be designed to BS7671: 2001 (16th) or BS7671: 2008 (17th). From 1 July, all new installations must be designed and installed to the 17th Edition.
